It used to be known as ‘Snowdrops in Art’ – an exhibition at Shaftesbury Arts Centre, run in conjunction with the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Festival every February. The only criterion for entry was that each piece had to feature snowdrops in some way.
But apparently some artists said they were fed up with painting snowdrops, so the show was renamed the Spring Open and the theme is now just ‘Spring’. I think that’s rather a shame – the Snowdrop motif gave the exhibition an expressive and unique brand – and more importantly, now it’s no longer exclusively about snowdrops, it isn’t listed as one of the Festival events, so loses out on publicity.
It’s still an excellent show, though, and on until Saturday 22nd February, open every day 10:00 – 16:00. Entrance is free.
