Have you ever seen Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights? It’s a natural phenomenon, usually occurring in or near the Arctic Circle, when brilliant lights in amazing shades of green, blue and purple appear in dynamic patterns across the night sky.
There is of course a scientific explanation: magnetically-charged particles released by the Sun collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing energy to be released in the form of light.
However, I prefer the Finnish legend of the Fire Foxes: mythical creatures racing through the sky, their huge furry tails sweeping up snowflakes which catch the moonlight and create sparks to light up the heavens.
My painting ‘Northern Lights’ is currently on display at the Spring Open Exhibition at Sou’-Sou’-West Gallery, Symondsbury Estate, Bridport DT6 6HG. It’s on until Sunday 2nd March, open daily 10:30 – 15:30, and displays the work of over 40 creatives, so do call in and have a look.
