Do you have a collection of DK (Dorling Kindersley) books?
A quick glance round our shelves shows about 20, mostly on art and gardening, but their reference books span just about every subject you can think of. I particularly appreciate the annotated illustrations – they present a huge amount of information in a very easy-to-digest format – and if you get tired of reading, you can just look at the pictures…
I picked up the DK Visual Guide to Human Anatomy in a charity shop, and find it a wonderful source of artistic inspiration, using the illustrations as incentives to play with shape and texture, intertwining and superimposing – and going wild and free with colour. It was most gratifying when my painting ‘Anatomy 2’ was recently accepted for the St Barbe Open Exhibition in Lymington, as over 500 entries were submitted and only 102 were selected. As you can imagine, I was even more delighted when it was Highly Commended!
‘Anatomy 2’ is in very good company at the St Barbe Open. The exhibition was held for the first time in 1999 and is now firmly established as a highlight in the arts calendar for Hampshire, Dorset and beyond.
The show runs until 26th April, at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, New Street, Lymington SO41 9BH, open Mon – Sat, 10am – 4pm. There is a small entrance fee but that will also get you into the museum with its fascinating displays exploring the history of Lymington and the surrounding towns and villages in the New Forest. They also have an excellent café and gift shop.
