Stepping through the doors of 1855 in Sturminster Newton feels less like entering a shop and more like uncovering a secret. Housed in the former NatWest building (and named for the year it was built), the grand old bank has shed its corporate skin and reinvented itself as a vibrant, characterful hub of local creativity.
Inside, you’ll find products from over 70 artisan traders gathered under one beautiful roof.
It’s a true Dorset treasure trove: art and photography, books and jewellery, candles, beauty products, crafts, clothing, stationery, delicious food and drink – all thoughtfully made or sourced locally. Every shelf and corner holds something unexpected.
1855 is part of the Sturminster Newton Benefit Society, a Registered Charity supporting local infrastructure, events, and community projects. The Society also runs three other shops in the town: The Emporium (brimming with collectibles, antiques, and kitchenalia), The Boutique (curated high-quality pre-loved fashion and accessories), and The Furniture Warehouse (second-hand furniture with plenty of character). Together, they’re breathing new life into the high street while giving back to the community.
